Explore the highlights of Santo Domingo, the oldest European-settled city in the Western Hemisphere. On this sightseeing tour of the Dominican Republic’s capital. With commentary from your local guide, a walking tour includes the Colonial Zone(“Zona Colonial”), listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You will be able to see many culturally significant landmarks of the area including Alcázar de Colón, Plaza de España, and the Iglesia de los Jesuitas among other landmarks. Wander through the Mueso de la Casas Reales, formerly the Governmental Palace, has an alluring display of colonial era artifacts. This part of the city on the west back of the Ozama River, is home to the Catedral Primada de America, the oldest cathedral in the Americas.
The tour continues with a stop at Los Tres Ojos (The Three Eyes), the name given to a 50-yard open-air limestone cave located in the Mirador del Este park, just outside Santa Domingo. Initially, the cave was used by the indigenous TaÃno Indians, the first inhabitants of the Hispaniola Island, for religious rituals.
Additional landmarks on this coach tour include the Monasterio de los Dominicos, the Monasterio Santa Clara and the Casa Nicolas de Ovando.
